Connections are reliable for navigation and streaming in most urban areas. Indoor signal in older, stone-built structures or large government buildings can sometimes be weaker. As there is no underground transport, you will maintain a consistent connection on public buses and taxis.

Mindelo: Expect solid 4G performance in the vibrant city center, along the Laginha beach, and around the bustling marina. Coverage is generally consistent for daily use. However, signal strength can decrease in the hills surrounding the city and may be less reliable inside some of the older, colonial-era buildings with thick walls. The ferry connection to Santo Antão will lose signal mid-journey.

Santa Maria: As the country's main tourist hub, Santa Maria boasts excellent 4G LTE coverage across its famous beach, hotel zones, and pedestrian-friendly streets. Network performance is optimized for visitors, ensuring reliable connections in most resorts, restaurants, and bars. While generally strong, indoor coverage can occasionally dip inside the largest, most sprawling all-inclusive resort complexes.

Sal Rei: Good 4G connectivity is concentrated in the main town of Sal Rei and the surrounding beachfront hotel areas. The signal is dependable for social media and maps around the town square and major resorts. Once you venture out on excursions into the Viana Desert or to more remote beaches, expect the signal to weaken considerably, often dropping to 3G or disappearing entirely.

Primary Island Roads: On major islands like Santiago, the main road connecting Praia and Tarrafal (EN1-ST01) maintains good connectivity in and around towns. However, signal becomes intermittent when passing through the mountainous interior, especially within the Serra Malagueta Natural Park.

Inter-Island Ferries: As there is no rail system, inter-island travel is by ferry or plane. On ferry routes between islands such as Santiago, Fogo, São Vicente, and Santo Antão, mobile signal is lost completely a few kilometers from shore and is unavailable for the majority of the open-water crossing.

Mountainous Regions: The volcanic interiors of islands like Santo Antão, Fogo, and São Nicolau have very limited or non-existent mobile coverage. The famous coastal road from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande on Santo Antão and the ascent to Chã das Caldeiras on Fogo are known for prolonged periods without signal.

Coastal Tunnels and Passes: Short road tunnels and sections of highway carved into steep coastal cliffs, particularly on São Vicente and Santo Antão, can cause brief but complete signal drops. Service typically resumes immediately after exiting these features.

Arid Inland Areas: On flatter, desert-like islands such as Sal and Boa Vista, 4G coverage is strong in tourist hubs like Santa Maria and Sal Rei. However, traveling into the sparsely populated inland areas can result in a weaker signal or a drop to slower 2G/3G networks.
