How Your Data Usage Is Calculated
Bcengi uses true pay-as-you-go billing. You are charged for exactly the data you use, down to the kilobyte.
Per-Kilobyte Billing
- Rates are displayed per GB for easy comparison, but you are charged per KB of actual usage
- If you use 100 MB in France ($1.19/GB), you pay about $0.12, not the full GB price
- There is no rounding up to the nearest GB or MB
Country-Specific Rates
- Each country has its own rate based on local carrier agreements
- Rates start at $1.19/GB (all EU countries and the UK), with higher rates in remote destinations
- Popular destinations: USA $1.68/GB, UK and EU $1.19/GB, Japan $2.82/GB, Australia $1.58/GB
- See all rates at bcengi.com/travelpass/pricing
What Counts as Data Usage
- Web browsing, email, social media
- App data (WhatsApp, Maps, Uber, etc.)
- Streaming audio and video
- VoIP calls (WhatsApp calls, FaceTime, Zoom)
- Background app refresh and sync
- System updates (if not on WiFi)
What Does NOT Use Data
- Regular phone calls and SMS (these use your physical SIM)
- WiFi connections (when on WiFi, the eSIM is not used)
Usage Reporting
- The portal at travel.bcengi.com shows usage with a 1-hour delay
- Real-time usage is reflected in your phone's built-in data tracker
- Your balance decreases in real time even though the portal updates hourly
Typical Data Usage Guide
- Light use (email, messaging, maps): ~200-500 MB per day
- Moderate use (social media, browsing, photos): ~500 MB to 1 GB per day
- Heavy use (video streaming, video calls): ~2-5 GB per day
Bcengi TravelPass is a pay-as-you-go eSIM: you only pay for data you use, with no bundles, no expiry, and no contracts. One eSIM works in 200+ countries.
