Pay As You Go eSIM: Pay Only for the Data You Use
A pay as you go eSIM is a travel eSIM that takes the cost of mobile data from a prepaid balance as you use it, instead of selling a fixed package of gigabytes for a set number of days. How Bcengi's pay as you go eSIM works
- Sign up and add balance. Create your account on travel.bcengi.com or in the Bcengi app and add money to your balance. Turn on auto-refill if you want it.
- Install the eSIM once. Scan the QR code on Wi-Fi before you leave. There is no physical card, and the eSIM stays on your phone for every trip.
- Use data abroad. When you land, select the Bcengi eSIM for mobile data. What you use is taken from your balance at that country's rate.
- Cross borders on the same balance. In the next country, the eSIM connects to a local network and the new country's rate applies. Nothing new to buy.

Rates are shown per GB for each country on the pricing page: the United Kingdom and every EU country are $1.19/GB, the United States is $1.68/GB, and Japan is $2.82/GB. Use is metered by the KB, so a short session is charged for what it used, not rounded up to a full GB.

How much data does a trip use?
Data use is hard to predict, which is why paying for what you use matters. Bcengi's public 2026 International Mobile Data Usage Report, a random sample of 10,000 travel periods of travelers on a pay as you go eSIM, found that travel periods of 6 to 8 days used a median of 1.38 GB, and 90% used less than 6.50 GB. Among 4 to 7 day trips, the traveler at the 90th percentile used 42 times as much data as the one at the 10th.
That spread is what makes a package hard to size. In the report's comparison, a 3 GB package would have covered three in four of those 4 to 7 day trips, and 58.5% of them would have used less than half of it. Using 1.38 GB in the United Kingdom costs $1.64 with Bcengi.
A package only beats pay as you go in one case: a stay of 30 days or more in a single country with heavy use that uses up the whole package. If that is your trip, compare the package's total price with your destination's rate times the data you expect to use.
